In value terms, magnesium exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together mixing up a 15% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +31.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Croatia (+85.0%), Slovenia (+14.7%), Italy (+8.9%) and the Czech Republic (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +85.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-1.6%), Belgium (-4.2%) and Germany (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands, Croatia and Slovenia increased by +53, +3.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest magnesium supplier in the European Union, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 6.6% share.
In the Netherlands, magnesium exports increased at an average annual rate of +30.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+7.4% per year) and Germany (-7.1% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of magnesium increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +44.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, magnesium imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +109.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the key importer of magnesium in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 34% of total imports in 2021. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Greece (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Croatia (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported magnesium in the European Union, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +29.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.2% per year) and France (-1.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
