Malt Market Size in the EU
The EU malt market was estimated at $X in 2022, rising by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a mild slump. In 2022, shipments abroad of malt increased by 2.8% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 4.5%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by the Netherlands (8.1%), Slovakia (5.5%) and the Czech Republic (4.6%). Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt supplying countries in the European Union were Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +10.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, supplies from abroad of malt decreased by -3.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 6.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the five major importers of malt, namely Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Austria (X tons), making up a 4.8% share of total imports. Romania (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 51% of total imports. Poland, Germany, Austria, Spain, Romania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +7.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Spain ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
