Malt Market Size in the EU
The EU malt market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the market value increased by 9.6%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Malt Production in the EU
In value terms, malt production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 9.9%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, exports of malt (not roasted) in the European Union rose remarkably to X tons, increasing by 15% on 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main exporters of malt (not roasted) in the European Union, together resulting at near 47% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (8.9%), Slovakia (5.5%) and the Czech Republic (5.3%). Denmark (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 62% of total exports. The Netherlands, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +9.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Malt Imports
Imports in the EU
Malt imports rose notably to X tons in 2021, increasing by 14% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main importers of malt (not roasted), together achieving 75% of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons), Romania (X tons), France (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Italy, Romania, Austria, Spain, France, Slovenia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
