Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) took a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Greece (5.9%) and Romania (5.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +159.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier in the European Union, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.

In Italy, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports expanded at an average annual rate of +219.2% over the period from 2012-2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The following importers - the Czech Republic (X tons), Greece (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. Hungary, Portugal, Lithuania, Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania, Italy and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
