Mate Market Size in the EU

The EU mate market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Mate Production in the EU

In value terms, mate production contracted notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the Czech Republic amounted to +22.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+0.4% per year) and Bulgaria (-0.5% per year).

Exports in the EU

In 2022, exports of mate in the European Union declined sharply to X tons, waning by -22.2% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 98%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mate exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 91%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany was the major exporter of mate in the European Union, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 43% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together mixing up a 50% share of total exports. Spain (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +110.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mate supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +91.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, the amount of mate imported in the European Union amounted to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mate imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the largest importers of mate in 2022, finishing at near 37% and 25% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together achieving a 23% share of total imports. The following importers - the Czech Republic (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - each reached a 5.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +68.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +52.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
