Mattress Market Size in the EU

After three years of decline, the EU mattress market increased by 5.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mattress production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of mattresses exported in the European Union amounted to X units, flattening at 2021. In general, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mattress exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Poland was the largest exporter of mattresses in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 37% of total exports in 2022. Portugal (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X units), Romania (X units), Denmark (X units), Belgium (X units), Italy (X units) and the Netherlands (X units). All these countries together held near 44% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mattress exports from Poland stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Romania (+39.8%), Portugal (+14.5%), Germany (+7.6%), the Netherlands (+3.4%) and Denmark (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +39.8% from 2012-2022. Belgium and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Romania (+6.4 p.p.), Poland (+6 p.p.) and Portugal (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-2.5 p.p.), Denmark (-4.7 p.p.), Belgium (-4.8 p.p.) and Italy (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest mattress supplier in the European Union, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.9% share.

In Poland, mattress exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+6.7% per year) and Denmark (+0.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per unit), while Portugal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of mattresses decreased by -40.9% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, mattress imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units), distantly followed by France (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Spain (X units), Italy (X units), Sweden (X units) and Austria (X units) represented the key importers of mattresses, together constituting 69% of total imports. The following importers - Denmark (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Belgium (X units), Poland (X units), Portugal (X units) and Finland (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, surging by 51% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per unit) and Italy ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) and Spain ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
