For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in shipments abroad of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers, which increased by 5.5% to X units in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, medical steriliser exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Italy (X units) was the main exporter of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers, comprising 33% of total exports. Germany (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Poland (10%), Spain (9.7%) and Sweden (5.8%). The following exporters - France (X units), Slovenia (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Finland (X units), Austria (X units), Denmark (X units), Estonia (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) - together made up 24% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to medical steriliser exports from Italy stood at +6.5%. At the same time, Slovenia (+32.8%), Poland (+30.0%), Estonia (+10.2%), Denmark (+8.5%), Spain (+7.7%), Austria (+3.3%) and Finland (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. Germany, France and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.1%) and Sweden (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Spain increased by +9.1, +7.2, +3.1 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest medical steriliser supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Spain, Finland, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +46.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per unit), while Estonia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Estonia represented the major importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 31% of total imports. France (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Germany (11%), Spain (5.3%), Austria (5%), the Netherlands (4.9%) and Poland (4.7%). The following importers - Italy (X units), Romania (X units), Lithuania (X units), Sweden (X units), Denmark (X units) and Belgium (X units) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Estonia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers imports, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lithuania (+16.6%), Romania (+10.8%), Poland (+10.8%), Spain (+8.6%), Sweden (+6.8%), France (+5.9%), Denmark (+4.6%), Austria (+3.4%) and Germany (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.1%) and Belgium (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Estonia (+30 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-1.6 p.p.), Austria (-2.1 p.p.), Belgium (-3.3 p.p.), Italy (-3.7 p.p.), Germany (-7.1 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-8.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Spain, Austria, Italy, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -22.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Estonia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
