The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 84%. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +93.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Austria (-8.4%) and Slovenia (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+39 p.p.), Italy (+16 p.p.), Belgium (+8.5 p.p.), France (+3.5 p.p.) and Germany (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Austria (-12 p.p.) and Slovenia (-21.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Belgium ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 82% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +161.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, medicaments containing penicillin export price increased by +4.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +26.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. The following importers - Poland (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total imports.
Imports into Austria increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+55.9%), France (+34.0%), Italy (+25.1%) and Belgium (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +55.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-8.0%) and Poland (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+16 p.p.), Romania (+13 p.p.), Austria (+11 p.p.), Italy (+11 p.p.) and Belgium (+6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Spain (-2.6 p.p.) and Poland (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest medicaments containing penicillin importing markets in the European Union were Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +56.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
