Melon Seed Market Size in the EU
The EU melon seed market declined modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Melon Seed Production in the EU
In value terms, melon seed production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 1,159% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Greece (X tons) remains the largest melon seed producing country in the European Union, accounting for 82% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold.
In Greece, melon seed production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
The average melon seed yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -3.3% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the melon seed harvested area in the European Union was estimated at X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon seed production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of melon seed, when their volume decreased by -31.3% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 109%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, melon seed exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 44% of total exports. France (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (9.7%), Spain (7.5%) and Austria (4.6%). The following exporters - Romania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.
Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Austria (+38.0%), Sweden (+34.1%), France (+27.7%), Romania (+25.6%), Spain (+19.7%) and Lithuania (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +38.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+21 p.p.), France (+17 p.p.), Spain (+5 p.p.), Austria (+4.2 p.p.), Lithuania (+3.6 p.p.), Romania (+3.5 p.p.) and Sweden (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -31.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in the European Union, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands totaled +21.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+7.0% per year) and Spain (+21.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 41% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 99%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+45.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Seed Imports
Imports in the EU
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of melon seed decreased by -19.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 202%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, melon seed imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 78%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Germany represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 38% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons). All these countries together held near 48% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lithuania (+62.2%), Ireland (+58.5%), Finland (+40.2%), Austria (+31.9%), France (+28.2%), the Netherlands (+9.7%), Spain (+6.8%) and Sweden (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +62.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Ireland, France, Austria, Lithuania and Finland increased by +14, +6.3, +5.3, +2.7, +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melon seed in the European Union, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.
In the Netherlands, melon seed imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+18.5% per year) and France (+10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+20.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
