Melon Market Size in the EU

The EU melon market totaled $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Melon Production in the EU

In value terms, melon production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 13%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), with a combined 84% share of total production. Romania, Portugal, Greece and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of melons in the European Union contracted modestly to X tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 3.8%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of melons production in the European Union shrank slightly to X ha, waning by -1.6% compared with the year before. Exports in the EU

For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded decline in overseas shipments of melons, which decreased by -15.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Spain was the largest exporter of melons in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together generating a 34% share of total exports.

Exports from Spain decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Italy (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+3.1 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest melon supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 88% of total exports. Italy lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7.2%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, purchases abroad of melons decreased by -11% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 5.7%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of melons, namely the Netherlands, France and Germany, represented more than half of total import. Spain (X tons) took a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Portugal (6.2%) and Belgium (4.5%). The following importers - Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest melon importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 62% of total imports. Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +7.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
