Mercury Market Size in the EU
The EU mercury market reduced slightly to $X in 2021, waning by -3.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.5% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Mercury Production in the EU
In value terms, mercury production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -0.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Mercury Exports
Exports in the EU
In 2021, mercury exports in the European Union soared to X tons, growing by 202% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 543%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mercury exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 150% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of mercuries, namely the Czech Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
The Czech Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries exports, with a CAGR of +89.1% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Czech Republic increased by +97 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) also remains the largest mercury supplier in the European Union.

Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -89% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 457%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the Czech Republic.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the Czech Republic amounted to -47.5% per year.
Mercury Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, the amount of mercuries imported in the European Union dropped markedly to X tons, declining by -56% against the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mercury imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the main importers of mercuries in 2021, accounting for approx. 23% and 19% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together mixing up a 42% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +123.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mercury importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), France ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Poland, the Netherlands and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 20%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +32.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 84%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
