Mica Market Size in the EU

In 2021, the EU mica market decreased by -16.2% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mica production dropped dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, mica exports in the European Union soared to X tons, jumping by 74% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mica exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) represented the major exporter of mica, committing 56% of total exports. Finland (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (15%) and Germany (5.6%). France (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mica exports from Spain stood at +7.5%. At the same time, Finland (+59.4%) and Germany (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +59.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-8.6%) and Belgium (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+23 p.p.), Finland (+20 p.p.) and Germany (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-2.8 p.p.) and Belgium (-38.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest mica supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), Belgium ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +70.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, falling by -17.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, approx. X tons of mica were imported in the European Union; picking up by 39% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mica imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the key importer of mica, generating 61% of total imports. France (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (9.8%) and the Czech Republic (4.8%). Romania (X tons) and Italy (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -4.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+13.6%) and Italy (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Romania (-2.8%), the Czech Republic (-4.2%) and Belgium (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+13 p.p.), Germany (+6.8 p.p.) and Italy (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belgium (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mica in the European Union, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to -1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+14.8% per year) and Belgium (-15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
