As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, NPK fertilizer exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +104.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium was the major exporter of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 31% of total exports in 2022. Finland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by the Netherlands (10%), Poland (9.8%), Spain (9.1%), Lithuania (5.6%) and Germany (5.3%).

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers. At the same time, Spain (+13.3%) and Lithuania (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012-2022. Poland and Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.1%) and the Netherlands (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain and Lithuania increased by +6.7 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, NPK fertilizer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of NPK fertilizer imports in 2022 were Spain (X tons), Romania (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ireland (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Estonia (X tons), together finishing at 73% of total import. Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Romania ($X) and Poland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 29% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 51% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, NPK fertilizer import price increased by +107.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
