Memories Market Size in the EU

For the fourth year in a row, the EU memories market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -9.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Memories Production in the EU

In value terms, memories production shrank remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of multichip integrated circuits: memories exported in the European Union surged to X units, increasing by 29% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild reduction. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, memories exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany was the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 50% of total exports. France (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by the Netherlands (15%). The following exporters - Ireland (X units) and Austria (X units) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of multichip integrated circuits: memories. At the same time, Ireland (+41.8%) and Austria (+34.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+4.9 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.6 p.p.), Ireland (+2.5 p.p.) and Austria (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest memories supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ireland and Austria, which together accounted for a further 4.9%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, memories export price decreased by -10.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per unit), while Austria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of multichip integrated circuits: memories, when their volume increased by 22% to X units. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, memories imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X units) and France (X units) were the largest importers of multichip integrated circuits: memories in 2021, reaching near 34% and 29% of total imports, respectively. The Netherlands (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.9% share, followed by Hungary (4.8%) and Italy (4.7%). The following importers - Poland (X units) and Latvia (X units) - together made up 6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +47.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest memories importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. France, Hungary, Italy and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +42.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+19.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
