The shipments of the five major exporters of newsprint, namely Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden and Austria, represented more than two-thirds of total export. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of -1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest newsprint supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 61% share of total exports. Austria, Sweden, Spain and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +1.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 58% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +65.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of newsprint increased by 5.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after eight years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium, Finland and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +7.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 51% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
