For the third consecutive year, the EU noils of wool market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 37% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of noils of wool or fine animal hair increased by 87% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, noils of wool exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the major exporter of noils of wool or fine animal hair, making up 44% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together making up a 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - together made up 8% of total exports.

Exports from the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+106.8%), Bulgaria (+14.3%) and Belgium (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +106.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-4.4%), Germany (-8.2%) and Spain (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bulgaria, Belgium and Romania increased by +7.8, +6.6 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Germany, Spain and Romania, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +76.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 8.3%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of noils of wool or fine animal hair increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, noils of wool imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Italy dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Lithuania (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and France (X tons) - together made up 9.7% of total imports.

Imports into Italy decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+10.8%), France (+6.7%) and Belgium (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2021. Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lithuania (-6.1%) and Germany (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic increased by +4.3, +3.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported noils of wool or fine animal hair in the European Union, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+8.2% per year) and Lithuania (-4.0% per year).
