In 2021, the EU soft drink market decreased by -35.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption recorded a deep slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink production declined remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU

Soft drink exports rose rapidly to X litres in 2021, picking up by 15% against 2020. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, soft drink exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +70.4% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of soft drinks, namely Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Denmark and Romania, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +14.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per litre in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 8.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per litre), while Romania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (-2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

For the tenth year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of soft drinks, which increased by 15% to X litres in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +70.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X litres), Belgium (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres) and France (X litres) represented roughly 47% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Austria (X litres), mixing up a 5% share of total imports. The following importers - Ireland (X litres), Hungary (X litres), Slovakia (X litres), Sweden (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Poland (X litres), Spain (X litres) and Portugal (X litres) - together made up 27% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soft drink importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 39% share of total imports. Belgium, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +19.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per litre, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
