Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 36% of total exports. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons) and Denmark (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Slovakia (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +52.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest graphite non-electrical articles supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.8% share.

In Germany, graphite non-electrical articles exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+5.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+10.4% per year).

Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Germany represented the key importer of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 29% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together creating a 47% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphite non-electrical articles imports into Germany stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Denmark (+23.5%), Spain (+13.7%), Belgium (+13.2%), Slovakia (+12.1%), Poland (+11.0%), Hungary (+8.7%), France (+4.5%), Italy (+4.1%), the Czech Republic (+3.4%) and Austria (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+5.9 p.p.), Denmark (+5.6 p.p.), Slovakia (+1.8 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France, Austria and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -1.6% and -11.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 56% share of total imports. France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
