The EU air conditioning machine market fell sharply to $X in 2022, declining by -17.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of non-window or wall air conditioning machines, when their volume decreased by -15.1% to X units. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, air conditioning machine exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Italy (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units) and France (X units) represented the key exporters of non-window or wall air conditioning machines, together comprising 70% of total exports. Hungary (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Sweden (X units), Slovakia (X units), Croatia (X units), Denmark (X units) and Lithuania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of non-window or wall air conditioning machines. At the same time, Croatia (+24.4%), the Netherlands (+7.0%), Poland (+5.5%), Spain (+3.8%), Slovakia (+3.6%), Denmark (+3.1%), Hungary (+2.6%) and Lithuania (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +24.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sweden (-1.8%), France (-1.9%), the Czech Republic (-3.1%) and Germany (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, Spain, Croatia and Poland increased by +4.6, +2.6, +2.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest air conditioning machine supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 51% of total exports. Spain, France, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Hungary ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of non-window or wall air conditioning machines, when their volume decreased by -24.9% to X units. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, air conditioning machine imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Imports by Country

France (X units), Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Italy (X units) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.1% share, followed by Spain (5.8%). Sweden (X units), Austria (X units), Belgium (X units), Finland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Lithuania (X units) and Greece (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest air conditioning machine importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 43% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Greece ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
