Exports in the EU
In 2021, the amount of nucleic acids and their salts exported in the European Union rose sharply to X tons, surging by 11% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nucleic acid exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 58%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 65% of total exports in 2021. Spain (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nucleic acid supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 31% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, France and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 9.3%.
Among the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -18.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, nucleic acid export price increased by +66.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 69%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
Nucleic acid imports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, growing by 6.1% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, nucleic acid imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the seven major importers of nucleic acids and their salts, namely Romania, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +52.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nucleic acids and their salts in the European Union, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.4% share.
In Belgium, nucleic acid imports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+9.1% per year) and Italy (+7.1% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 125% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a resilient expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
