The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major exporter of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, generating 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together committing a 36% share of total exports. France (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+7.2%), Belgium (+5.2%) and Germany (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-3.4%) and France (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+4.5 p.p.), Germany (+2.9 p.p.) and Spain (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-6.4 p.p.) and Italy (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6% share.

In the Netherlands, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.4% per year) and Italy (-9.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable downturn. In 2022, purchases abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -14.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 50% of total imports in 2022. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.9% share, followed by France (8.7%), Spain (8.4%) and Belgium (5.3%). Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Italy, Spain, Belgium and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +1.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
