Optical fiber cables exports reached X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +91.4% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, optical fiber cables exports rose to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +36.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 34%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) was the main exporter of optical fiber cables, constituting 31% of total exports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Romania (10%), Germany (10%), Spain (8.8%) and the Netherlands (7.7%). The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical fiber cables exports from France stood at +8.3%. At the same time, Romania (+36.0%), the Czech Republic (+15.2%), Poland (+14.2%) and the Netherlands (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Romania, Poland, France, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic increased by +9.2, +7.4, +5.9, +2.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, France ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Romania, the Czech Republic and Spain, which together accounted for a further 32%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +33.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
Optical fiber cables imports rose significantly to X tons in 2022, surging by 5.3% compared with the year before. In general, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 48%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, optical fiber cables imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of optical fiber cables, namely France, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together generating a 16% share of total imports. Denmark (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +49.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest optical fiber cables importing markets in the European Union were France ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports.
France, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
