In 2021, the EU cyclic hydrocarbons market increased by 11% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Cyclic Hydrocarbons Production in the EU
In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, shipments abroad of other cyclic hydrocarbons increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the main exporter of other cyclic hydrocarbons, creating 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons), together making up a 48% share of total exports. Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest cyclic hydrocarbons supplier in the European Union, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.1% share.
In Germany, cyclic hydrocarbons exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+2.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Cyclic Hydrocarbons Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of other cyclic hydrocarbons decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the key importer of other cyclic hydrocarbons in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Germany (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (11%) and France (9.5%). Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cyclic hydrocarbons imports into the Netherlands stood at +14.6%. At the same time, Poland (+44.3%), Belgium (+2.5%), Germany (+2.0%) and France (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +44.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of the Netherlands (+26 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belgium (-4.2 p.p.), France (-5 p.p.) and Germany (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest cyclic hydrocarbons importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by France and Poland, which together accounted for a further 14%.
Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +40.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
