In 2021, the EU p-xylene market increased by 8.2% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, p-xylene production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 93%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in the EU
P-xylene exports rose markedly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 8.5% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 64%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, p-xylene exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the major exporter of p-xylene in the European Union, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total exports. France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+18 p.p.) and France (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -7.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest p-xylene supplier in the European Union, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands totaled -10.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+8.6% per year) and France (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
P-Xylene Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of p-xylene increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, p-xylene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed slight growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Portugal was the largest importer of p-xylene in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together took near 61% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +267.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Portugal ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 79% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain and Poland, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +245.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
