P-Xylene Market Size in the EU

In 2021, the EU p-xylene market increased by 8.2% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands was the major exporter of p-xylene in the European Union, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2021. France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest p-xylene supplier in the European Union, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands totaled -10.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+8.6% per year) and France (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of p-xylene increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, p-xylene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed slight growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Portugal was the largest importer of p-xylene in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together took near 61% share of total imports.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
