Portugal (X tons) remains the largest seed, fruit and spore used for sowing producing country in the European Union, accounting for 43% of total volume. Moreover, production of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing in Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Portugal was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Spain (+41.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+10.7% per year).

Exports in the EU
In 2022, the amount of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing exported in the European Union contracted to X tons, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -9.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the five major exporters of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing, namely Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Austria, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), comprising a 5.2% share of total exports. Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest seed, fruit and spore used for sowing supplier in the European Union, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.
In the Netherlands, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing shrank by an average annual rate of -5.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+11.1% per year) and Spain (+7.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, the amount of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing imported in the European Union dropped modestly to X tons, approximately equating 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the largest importers of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing in the European Union, together generating 44% of total imports. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by the Netherlands (9.4%), Austria (6.4%) and France (5.4%). The following importers - Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Greece (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 47% share of total imports. Italy, France, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Slovakia, Portugal, Lithuania and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Among the main importing countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
