Papaya Market Size in the EU
The EU papaya market fell to $X in 2022, declining by -9.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Papaya Production in the EU
In value terms, papaya production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in the EU
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of papayas decreased by -35.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, papaya exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Portugal (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together mixing up a 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons), Greece (X tons) and France (X tons) - each recorded a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +51.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest papaya supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Portugal ($X), together comprising 80% of total exports. Germany, France, Greece and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +49.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of papayas decreased by -21.1% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, papaya imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Portugal (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the key importers of papayas in 2022, recording approx. 27% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Spain (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by the Netherlands (11%), France (7.5%) and Italy (6.8%). Belgium (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest papaya importing markets in the European Union were Portugal ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
