The EU paper and paperboard market shrank remarkably to $X in 2022, reducing by -26.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2022, France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the major exporters of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in the European Union, together amounting to near 52% of total exports. Germany (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Sweden (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard export price increased by +15.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 25%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

In 2022, Italy (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the major importers of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), together mixing up 78% of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
