The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Romania (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Latvia (X cubic meters), Spain (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters), Luxembourg (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters) represented roughly 85% of total exports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest particle board supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 36% of total exports. Romania, Belgium, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Spain, Latvia, Hungary and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +18.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per cubic meter), while Luxembourg ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of particle board decreased by -12.9% to X cubic meters in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 13%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, particle board imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Poland (X cubic meters), the Netherlands (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters) and Spain (X cubic meters) were the largest importers of particle board, together comprising 61% of total imports. The following importers - Sweden (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Lithuania (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), Denmark (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported particle board in the European Union, comprising 20% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.2% share.

In Germany, particle board imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.9% per year) and Poland (+7.3% per year).
