For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in shipments abroad of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks, which increased by 31% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 40%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, drawing chalk exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

France represented the key exporter of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in the European Union, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 35% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Denmark (X units) and Poland (X units). All these countries together held near 50% share of total exports. Italy (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing chalk exports from France stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Denmark (+34.8%), Poland (+33.0%), Belgium (+12.2%), Italy (+11.7%), the Netherlands (+7.2%) and Germany (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Denmark, Belgium and Poland increased by +5.8, +5.7 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest drawing chalk supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 59% of total exports. Belgium, Poland, Italy and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +26.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks increased by 32% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X units), Slovakia (X units), the Netherlands (X units), France (X units), Poland (X units), Spain (X units), Belgium (X units) and Italy (X units) represented roughly 81% of total imports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +31.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest drawing chalk importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +13.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, falling by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
