The EU pear market fell markedly to $X in 2021, declining by -16.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear production declined markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together accounting for 53% of total production. These countries were followed by Italy, Portugal, Poland, Greece, France, Romania, Austria and Germany, which together accounted for a further 45%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average pear yield shrank sharply to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -18.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of pears were harvested in the European Union; approximately equating 2020. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. In 2021, approx. X tons of pears were exported in the European Union; remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pear exports rose to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the main exporters of pears in the European Union, together resulting at near 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together committing a 39% share of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total exports. Italy, Portugal, Poland and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +5.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of pears, when their volume increased by 8.7% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pear imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of pear imports in 2021 were Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together reaching 60% of total import. Spain (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 55% of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Romania, Sweden, Austria, Portugal and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
