Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

France was the major exporter of peas (green) in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Poland (8.1%), Slovakia (7%), Romania (6.9%) and Germany (5.1%). Latvia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from France increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+75.4%), Slovakia (+33.4%) and Poland (+29.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +75.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-1.3%), the Netherlands (-2.0%) and Germany (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+7.4 p.p.), Slovakia (+6.6 p.p.) and Latvia (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Romania (-2.2 p.p.), the Netherlands (-5.1 p.p.) and Germany (-5.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in the European Union, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands totaled +3.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+0.6% per year) and Germany (-4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Belgium was the major importer of peas (green) in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. In value terms, the largest green peas importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 67% of total imports. France, Denmark, Spain, Italy and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +42.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
