Persimmon Market Size in the EU

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU persimmon market, when its value decreased by -8.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The following exporters - Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Spain decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+7.6%) and Italy (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%) and the Netherlands (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lithuania (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Spain (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in the European Union, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain stood at -3.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-4.3% per year) and Lithuania (+2.0% per year).

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas purchases of persimmons decreased by -15.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon imports declined to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the key importers of persimmons, together creating 74% of total imports. The following importers - Portugal (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Finland (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Slovakia (with a CAGR of +163.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.

In Germany, persimmon imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+5.8% per year) and Italy (+11.5% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year.
