In 2021, the EU photographic flashbulb market increased by 49% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +72.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, photographic flashbulb production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1.6%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, overseas shipments of photographic flashbulbs and flashcubes increased by 38% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic flashbulb exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units) represented the major exporter of photographic flashbulbs and flashcubes, comprising 39% of total exports. Sweden (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (18%), Denmark (7.1%) and Ireland (5.2%). The following exporters - the Netherlands (X units) and Spain (X units) - each resulted at a 5.5% share of total exports.

Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+175.4%), Sweden (+68.4%), Spain (+47.9%), France (+41.8%), Ireland (+14.9%) and the Netherlands (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +175.4% from 2012-2021. Sweden (+19 p.p.), France (+17 p.p.), Denmark (+7.1 p.p.), Ireland (+3.3 p.p.) and Spain (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -38.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest photographic flashbulb supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-8.6% per year) and France (+0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -18.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (-3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, overseas purchases of photographic flashbulbs and flashcubes increased by 102% to X units, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, photographic flashbulb imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +82.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 38% of total imports. The Netherlands (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X units), Belgium (X units) and Portugal (X units). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total imports. Denmark (X units) and Spain (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +56.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest photographic flashbulb importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. France, Denmark, Spain and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.9%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +28.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 461% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while Portugal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
