Pig Iron Market Size in the EU

The EU pig iron market rose sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of pig iron and spiegeleisen were exported in the European Union; growing by 11% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 42%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, pig iron exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 65% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) took a 6.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (8%), Sweden (0.2%), Germany (22%), Belgium (7.4%), France (9.1%) and Italy (6.9%). From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +11.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+2.5% per year) and France (+11.6% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of pig iron and spiegeleisen increased by 25% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Italy represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 44% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) - each finished at a 6.7% share of total imports.

Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+8.6%) and Poland (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-2.7%), France (-2.8%), Germany (-8.0%) and Belgium (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy and the Netherlands increased by +9.6 and +7.5 percentage points, respectively. Spain (-1.8 p.p.), Belgium (-5.5 p.p.) and Germany (-10.5 p.p.) saw their shares reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
