Pineapple Market Size in the EU

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU pineapple market, when its value decreased by -7.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the major exporter of pineapples, constituting 48% of total exports. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Portugal (10%), Italy (9%) and France (7.6%). Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Italy (+7.8%), Portugal (+7.4%), France (+4.7%), Spain (+4.2%) and Poland (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-13.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands and France increased by +9.3, +7.5, +6.8, +5.4 and +5.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with an 8.4% share.

In the Netherlands, pineapple exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+6.6% per year) and Portugal (+7.8% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 10% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of pineapple imports in 2022 were the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together recording 76% of total import. It was distantly followed by Portugal (X tons), committing a 7.3% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Portugal, with a CAGR of +4.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Belgium ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
