Pistachio Market Size in the EU

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU pistachio market, when its value decreased by -16.1% to $X. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Pistachio Production in the EU

In value terms, pistachio production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 35%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together accounting for 95% of total production. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, which accounted for a further 3.6%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +459.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in the European Union expanded slightly to X kg per ha, picking up by 2.2% on 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 7%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pistachio harvested area in the European Union reached X ha, remaining stable against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pistachio production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU

For the third consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in overseas shipments of pistachios, which increased by 2.5% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 40%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, pistachio exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the major exporter of pistachios in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Greece (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together creating a 38% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pistachio exports from Germany stood at +8.3%. At the same time, Italy (+23.0%), Spain (+15.8%) and Greece (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-6.9%) and Belgium (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Spain and Italy increased by +25, +4.4 and +4.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest pistachio supplier in the European Union, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.8% share.

In Germany, pistachio exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-6.1% per year) and Italy (+19.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pistachios decreased by -15.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the key importer of pistachios, creating 39% of total imports. Italy (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (11%), France (6.5%) and the Netherlands (5.5%). The following importers - Luxembourg (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each recorded an 8.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+9.2%), Italy (+8.8%) and Spain (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-2.0%), Luxembourg (-3.9%) and the Netherlands (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+9 p.p.), Spain (+3.4 p.p.), Germany (+3.3 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -3.4% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Luxembourg ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
