In 2022, Spain (X tons) represented the major exporter of plums and sloes, comprising 38% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - Greece (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest plum and sloe supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +2.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of plums and sloes decreased by -6.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, plum and sloe imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 40% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together generating a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Portugal (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest plum and sloe importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Croatia, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
