Poppy Seed Market Size in the EU

The EU poppy seed market declined to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 70% of total production. Hungary, Croatia, Germany and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average poppy seed yield reduced to X kg per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the poppy seed yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, shipments abroad of poppy seed increased by 3.5% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, poppy seed exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -14.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the largest exporter of poppy seed, committing 44% of total exports. Spain (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (9.6%), the Netherlands (7.3%), France (7.2%), Austria (6.1%), Slovakia (5.2%) and Hungary (5.1%).

Exports from the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovakia (+21.8%), Poland (+6.9%) and Hungary (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.1%), Spain (-3.8%) and the Netherlands (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland and Slovakia increased by +5.3 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest poppy seed supplier in the European Union, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Czech Republic totaled +2.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-0.0% per year) and Poland (+12.3% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, poppy seed export price decreased by -24.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 56%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 24%.
