Explosives Market Size in the EU

The EU explosives market was estimated at $X in 2021, increasing by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, explosives production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of prepared explosives was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, explosives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of prepared explosives, namely Poland, Spain and France, represented more than half of total export. It was distantly followed by Portugal (X tons), Finland (X tons), Romania (X tons), Italy (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together generating a 37% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Poland ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 54% of total exports. These countries were followed by Finland, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, supplies from abroad of prepared explosives was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, explosives imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Finland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the largest importer of prepared explosives in the European Union, achieving 59% of total import. Spain (X tons) held a 6.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (5.8%) and Croatia (5.4%). The following importers - France (X tons), Greece (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 39% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Italy, Slovakia, Belgium, Spain, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Greece, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 9%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
