In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in the EU primary cell and battery market, when its value decreased by -4.8% to $X. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +67.1% against 2016 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in the EU

In value terms, primary cell and battery production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 29%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, primary cell and battery exports in the European Union reached X units, picking up by 7.8% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units) and Belgium (X units) represented roughly 64% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (4.7%). Romania (X units) and France (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. The Netherlands, France and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries decreased by -4.6% to X units for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.2% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the major importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 30% of total imports. Belgium (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Romania (X units), France (X units) and Spain (X units). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total imports. The following importers - Italy (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Sweden (X units), Hungary (X units), Austria (X units) and Ireland (X units) - together made up 13% of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+19.3%), Poland (+15.7%), Ireland (+13.5%), the Netherlands (+10.2%), Hungary (+7.2%), Austria (+5.5%), France (+4.2%), Italy (+3.3%) and Sweden (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2022. Belgium and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Poland, Romania and the Netherlands increased by +8.2, +6.4, +4.7 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported primary cells and batteries in the European Union, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.

In Germany, primary cell and battery imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+1.0% per year) and France (+2.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 7.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
