Printing Ink Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU printing ink market decreased by -2.9% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a mild curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, printing ink exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Germany was the major exporter of printing ink in the European Union, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total exports.

Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Luxembourg (+8.8%) and Spain (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest printing ink supplier in the European Union, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

In Germany, printing ink exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-3.2% per year) and France (+1.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded slight growth. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
