The EU printing press market soared to $X in 2022, increasing by 111% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a resilient expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, shipments abroad of printing presses was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing press exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Slovakia (X units), Italy (X units), France (X units) and Spain (X units) represented roughly 71% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (X units) took a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (7.8%). Germany (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest printing press supplier in the European Union, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.4% share.

In Germany, printing press exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-0.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -11.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+28.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of printing presses increased by 30% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 66%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, printing press imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a mild setback. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Spain represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 39% of total imports. The Netherlands (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (11%), Italy (6.9%) and Austria (4.9%). The following importers - Ireland (X units) and Greece (X units) - each accounted for a 5.3% share of total imports.

Spain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the printing presses imports, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Greece (+13.6%), Austria (+10.7%), the Netherlands (+9.5%), France (+7.1%) and Ireland (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Spain (+20 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest printing press importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 44% of total imports. Spain, Austria, Greece and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Greece, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -13.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
