Propene Market Size in the EU

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the EU propene market, when its value increased by 1.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, propene exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main exporters of propene (propylene), together mixing up 78% of total exports. France (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to propene exports from the Netherlands stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Latvia (+105.3%), Poland (+42.0%), Romania (+34.4%), Sweden (+14.6%), Portugal (+8.4%), Germany (+7.4%) and Hungary (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany, Latvia, Romania, Portugal, Poland and Sweden increased by +3.4, +2.7, +2.4, +2, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest propene supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 53% share of total exports. Italy, Belgium, Portugal, France, Hungary, Latvia, Sweden, Romania and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +144.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Latvia ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of propene (propylene) imported in the European Union soared to X tons, rising by 15% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
