In 2022, the EU market for pulp from fibres other than wood decreased by -12.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a deep contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of pulp from fibres other than wood decreased by -20.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of pulp from fibres other than wood dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the major exporters of pulp from fibres other than wood, together generating 82% of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Estonia (with a CAGR of +92.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pulp from fibres other than wood supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), Hungary ($X) and Spain ($X), together comprising 73% of total exports. The Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Estonia, Denmark and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +107.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for pulp from fibres other than wood increased by +68.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of pulp from fibres other than wood, when their volume decreased by -9.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany was the main importer of pulp from fibres other than wood in the European Union, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. Austria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by the Netherlands (10%), France (10%), Sweden (7.9%), Belgium (5.6%) and Italy (5.6%).

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+7.0%), Sweden (+2.7%) and France (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-4.9%) and Austria (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+3.3 p.p.), France (+3.3 p.p.), Sweden (+3.1 p.p.), Germany (+3 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Italy and Austria saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -15.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pulp from fibres other than wood in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+2.5% per year) and France (+1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
