In 2022, after six years of growth, there was decline in the EU pyrites market, when its value decreased by -1.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the market value increased by 4.1%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, pyrites production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 2.4%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pyrites decreased by -28.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pyrites exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Finland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the largest exporter of pyrites in the European Union, achieving 89% of total export. Germany (X tons) and Austria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest pyrites supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy amounted to +5.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (-15.2% per year) and Finland (-20.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 57%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of pyrites decreased by -42.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pyrites imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 79%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Italy represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Austria (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Sweden (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each finished at a 3.8% share of total imports.
Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Denmark (+64.8%), the Czech Republic (+22.7%) and Spain (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +64.8% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Austria (-5.6%) and Germany (-21.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+36 p.p.), Denmark (+10 p.p.), Spain (+6.7 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-59.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +21.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 54%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
