Quinoa Market Size in the EU

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU quinoa market, when its value decreased by -13.1% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Quinoa Production in the EU

In value terms, quinoa production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of quinoa production, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In Spain, quinoa production increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the average yield of quinoa in the European Union expanded slightly to X tons per ha, picking up by 4.2% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 33%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of quinoa production in the European Union dropped to X ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to quinoa production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, shipments abroad of quinoa decreased by -7.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 115%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the main exporter of quinoa in the European Union, mixing up 84% of total export. It was distantly followed by Slovenia (X tons), making up a 4.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +108.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 52% of total exports. Spain, France, Belgium and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Among the main exporting countries, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +97.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, overseas purchases of quinoa decreased by -10.2% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 48%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, quinoa imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of quinoa imports in 2021 were Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together finishing at 75% of total import. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), committing a 5.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +77.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Denmark, Sweden and Greece, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Greece, with a CAGR of +79.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 50%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
