In 2021, the EU rare earth metal market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rare earth metal exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Netherlands represented the major exporter of rare earth metals in the European Union, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), constituting a 33% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -67.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Germany represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 37% of total imports.
