In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the EU cows skin market, when its value increased by 47% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals increased by 28% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cows skin exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) was the key exporter of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, making up 37% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and France (X tons), together achieving a 53% share of total exports. Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cows skin exports from Italy stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Slovenia (+8.8%), France (+8.3%), Portugal (+4.5%) and Slovakia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In terms of the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +10.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 18%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) was the largest importer of raw hides and skins of bovine animals in the European Union, making up 63% of total import. Austria (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Slovenia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +3.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
