These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia, Austria, Romania, Portugal and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 49%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +35.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cattle hide and skin yield expanded to X kg per head in 2021, picking up by 2.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 6%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the cattle hide and skin yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in the European Union stood at X heads, leveling off at the year before. In general, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 2.5% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total exports in 2021. Austria (X tons) held a 6.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (6.3%), Ireland (6.2%) and Poland (5.9%). Belgium (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 44% share of total exports. Spain, Italy, Poland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +0.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle, when their volume increased by 18% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

France, the Netherlands and Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
