After three years of growth, shipments abroad of rice bran decreased by -4.6% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, rice bran exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the key exporters of rice bran, together generating 82% of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rice bran supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 69% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +15.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of rice bran increased by 4.4% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.0% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, rice bran imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 50%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany was the major importer of rice bran in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2021. Luxembourg (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (8.9%), France (7.9%), Portugal (7.6%), Spain (7.5%) and the Netherlands (4.9%).
Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Luxembourg (+28.8%), Portugal (+16.0%) and Spain (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-2.2%) and Belgium (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+21 p.p.), Luxembourg (+11 p.p.) and Portugal (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-4 p.p.), France (-6 p.p.) and Belgium (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Luxembourg ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 54% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +32.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
